Visual representation of enterprise architectures

Our prototype represents a possible illustration of an enterprise architecture. The requirement for the creation of this prototype was a service-oriented system architecture (SOA) of the illustrated enterprise. It is a three-dimensional illustration that includes processes and services that are integrated and that are a subject to the principal of the loose coupling. This model is supposed to support observers to understand the processes and the cooperating of services. Furthermore, it is an assistance to identify weaknesses of the architecture. The model does not presupposes previous knowledge for the understanding of illustration.

Motivation

The increasing competition is a challenge for enterprises. The competition pressure pushes them to optimise and proof their organizational structures and processes permanently. The first step for the improvement of the organizational structure is about the understanding of the enterprise structure. After that it is possible to identify weaknesses of the enterprise architecture. For this purpose, a model of an enterprise is necessary to document the processes of an enterprise.

Description of a solution

First of all we sum up the ideas and the concepts of the prototype development. This approach was not very clear. Therefore, an implementation of this ideas took place with the program Visio and it was possible to create first pictures of the prototype. The transfer of that to PowerPoint was supposed to contribute to a first impression of the program process. On this basis it was possible to refine the prototype on paper and with Visio. The program Visio only provides two-dimensional illustrations of enterprise architectures. Because of that the project’s implementation took place with 3d Max 8.
