Visualisation of mass data on the basis of relational data and their relationships

Data bases that are based on relational data only have restricted possibilities to get an overview of the structure of data. The application „Visual Shopping Control“ is independent of sources and the use of this application makes it easier to illustrate and to search for relational data. Moreover, the application includes a simplified navigation for a faster and uncomplicated creation of JOINS and queries.

Motivation

Nowadays it is a challenge to process and prepare digital data. A simplified and clear handling of contextual data is a requirement for a fast searching and finding of specific contents. Therefore, we decided on designing the illustration of relational data more clearly. We aimed at developing a user interface that is based on a web shop data base (see illustration) and that enables seeing all the particular field names and the content of the data with the same view. Furthermore, it was our goal to enable the connection of tables via a drag and drop feature and to develop automatically generated queries that illustrate data sets comprehensively.

Description of a solution

After a lot of attempts of solving the described problem by using Flash, Photoshop, Expression Design and Expression Blend, we decided for a web-based solution that included HTML, JavaScript and paint.NET. The users can click on the tables interactively and they can displace them. Due to that it is possible to assemble data sets and to get a clear of illustration of them.
