Kidipedia

An online encyclopaedia from and for children

Kidipedia was a project of our research group in cooperation with UNIAKTIV, the centre for social learning and social responsibility (Zentrum für gesellschaftliches Lernen und soziale Verantwortung) and Prof. Peschel (Didaktik des Sachunterrichts).

The goal of the project was to enhance the quality of school lessons from first class until sixth class by offering a web-based encyclopaedia from and for kids. With respect to the school year of a child and with the assistance of a supervisor, the project involved them to create content of the encyclopaedia for other children. The priority of the project was the providing of a child-oriented environment with a gender-neutral didactic context and with the consideration of new media. The created content, or more specifically the lexicon entries, can consist of elements like texts, pictures or videos. An important aspect of Kidipedia is the providing of an easy access and a simple creation of the contents for the children. The contents of the encyclopaedia are classified into segments like science, painting pictures, sports and music.

The ability of handling with computers and the internet is an important core competence of the present society. The children already learn how to improve these skills during their school lessons. Besides the technological skills, it is also important to learn how to use these skills rationally. Team working within a multimedia environment is already meaningful for children when they are young. In this context, Kidipedia was supposed to contribute to the quality of school lessons of young pupils.
