Empowering Patient Comprehension with Generative AI" by Gero Strobel and Leonardo Banh was accepted at the 32nd European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS)! The paper focuses on the use of generative AI to improve communication between doctor and patient. It picks up on this year's ECIS theme ("People First: Constructing Digital Futures Together") and shows how innovative technologies can put people's needs first.

ECIS 2024 will be held in Paphos, Cyprus, from June 13-19 2024. We congratulate Gero Strobel and Leonardo Banh on this success and wish them an exciting conference with interesting discussions!

Abstract:

„As global challenges, such as pandemics, population growth and widespread illnesses, continue to rise, healthcare systems are facing greater strain, resulting in a shortage of resources and increased demands for medical care. Effective communication between healthcare professionals and patients is essential for the provision of good services to prevent confusion and induced anxiety of patients, particularly when medical jargon is employed and not understood. Generative AI (GAI) presents a chance to transform healthcare communication by providing language processing capabilities that enhance patient-centered services. This paper examines how GAI-based conversational agents for explaining medical jargon in healthcare should be designed. We derived eleven design principles from a systematic literature review and evaluated them with nine clinical cardiological scenarios through a prototypical instantiation of an LLM-based conversational agent. The results provide insights for researchers and healthcare providers in form of prescriptive design knowledge to improve patient communication using GAI.“

Keywords: Generative AI, Conversational Agent, Healthcare, Design Science Research.

Robert Woroch and Gero Strobel publish papers at ICIS 2022 https://www.softec.wiwi.uni-due.de//en/news/news/robert-woroch-and-gero-strobel-publish-papers-at-icis-2022-23169/?no_cache=1 The Chair of Information Systems and Software Engineering (SOFTEC) is represented with two scientific contributions at this year's International Conference on Information System (ICIS). The papers on the topics of platform-based FinTech ecosystems and their value creation by Robert Woroch, Gero Strobel and Tobias Wulfert as well as kernel theories in the context of design science research by Gero Strobel in collaboration with other authors have been accepted for the conference.

ICIS is one of the world's most prestigious conferences for academics and research-oriented practitioners in the field of information systems and has been held annually for over 40 years under a changing theme. This year, ICIS 2022 was themed "Digitization for the Next Generation" and took place December 9-14 in Copenhagen, Denmark with over 1,600 attendees from 53 countries.

The article "Four Shades of Customer: How Value Flows in Fintech Ecosystems" by Robert WorochGero Strobel and Tobias Wulfert addresses the transition of the financial industry from a scale economy to a platform-driven network economy and examines value creation within fintech ecosystems. To this end, a multi-case study was used to analyze six business models from different industries in the fintech sector and, based on this, to identify key roles, value creation activities and value streams. The paper provides a holistic value network for the fintech ecosystem based on a systematic literature review and the analysis of a total of 171 fintech companies. The study shows that fintech platforms orchestrate multiple market sides and that customers occupy four different roles within the ecosystem when utilizing fintech services.

The second publication, "Unveiling the Cloak: Kernel Theory Use in Design Science Research“ by Gero Strobel in collaboration with co-authors Frederik Möller, Thorsten Schoormann and Magnus Rotvit Perlt Hansen, explores how kernel theories inform the development of design principles in design science research (DSR). Based on a systematic literature review, six mechanisms including associated activities and application points for operationalizing kernel theory are identified. The use of kernel theories is reflected afterwards, as well as a research agenda is developed. The paper provides guidance to researchers on how to use kernel theories more effectively, as well as an overview of options for operationalizing kernel theories.

Gero Strobel and Robert Woroch publish their papers at ECIS 2021 https://www.softec.wiwi.uni-due.de//en/news/news/gero-strobel-and-robert-woroch-publish-their-papers-at-ecis-2021-21961/?no_cache=1 The Chair of Information Systems and Software Engineering (SOFTEC) is represented with two scientific contributions at this year's European Conference on Information System (ECIS). The Chair of Information Systems and Software Engineering (SOFTEC) is represented with two scientific contributions at this year's European Conference on Information System (ECIS). The papers on Internet of Things (IoT)-based business models by Robert Woroch and Gero Strobel and on Internet of Nano-Things (IoNT) systems by Gero Strobel have been accepted to the conference.

ECIS is one of the world's most renowned conferences in the field of information systems and has been held annually since 1993 under a changing topic. This year, ECIS 2021 will be held under the motto "Human Values Crisis in a Digitizing World" and will not take place in Marrakech as originally planned, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, but online as part of the "AIS Virtual Conference Series" from June 14 - 16, 2021.

The paper "UNDERSTANDING VALUE CREATION IN DIGITAL COMPANIES – A TAXONOMY OF IOT-ENABLED BUSINESS MODELS" by Robert Woroch and Gero Strobel addresses the challenges in the context of identifying and developing value-adding, IoT-based offerings. As a link between strategy and business processes, business models provide a holistic view of organizations, but do not yet take IoT-specific characteristics into account. To address this shortcoming, a taxonomy for describing IoT-based business models was developed and evaluated using a sample of more than 100 empirical objects. The study also provides insights into the design of business models in the domains of consumer electronics and healthcare. On the one hand, the taxonomy serves as a tool for examining the integration of IoT into innovative business models and, on the other hand, as a basis for further research in this area.

The second publication "HONEY, I SHRUNK THE INTERNET OF THINGS: AN INTERNET OF NANO-THINGS TAXONOMY" by Gero Strobel addresses the next evolutionary stage of the Internet of Things, the Internet of Nano-Things. This approach combines the conventional IoT paradigm with methods and concepts from the nanotechnology field. The purpose is to exploit completely new, hitherto unprecedented application potentials by reducing the size of the objects and thus changing the material properties. The publication provides a first classification approach in the form of a taxonomy for the classification and description of the fundamental concepts of this field.
