Smart Information System Modelling Language (SISML)

Smart products, based on the technological development of the last few years and the associated progressive digitalization, increasingly pervade all areas of professional and everyday life, which leads to an irreversible fusion of the real and digital world. Smart products act as a link between the physical and digital world, even in system-relevant and formerly conservative domains such as agriculture, the energy sector or even health care. McKinsey assumes that by 2023, 43 billion intelligent products will be used in various domains.

However, in order to exploit the full potential of these systems in a value-added manner, it is not enough to use individual sensors, actuators or smart products, but it is necessary to design and develop holistic, smart information systems from scratch. In order to adopt and apply such a systemic perspective, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the individual system components, their structure and properties, as well as the corresponding languages and tools for implementation.

Against this background, the goal of the research project is to develop a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) and corresponding modeling tools for smart information systems by combining classical modeling tools and methods with new technologies such as Augemented Reality. SISML is part of the Design Science oriented research project SISA - Smart Information System Architecture for the development of an IS architecture for IoT-based smart information systems.
